The School opened in 1901 in a timber building built by the government. Extensions were built in 1907 and 1909. The decline in mining reduced the relevance of the institution and moves for its transfer to the Education Department were made in 1921, but it was closed in 1925. After standing empty for many years, and threatened with demolition in 1977, the local community liaised with the National Trust to restore the building for community use.
