Clare Institute

Old North Road. Clare, 1871-72.

The first attempt to establish an institute in Clare failed. A second attempt was successful as a result of a gift of land, a government contribution, and fund raising events. The library and offices occupied the ground floor and a meeting room was located on the first floor. The building is constructed in stone. The main features of the symmetrical design are the windows framed by pediments; those on the upper floor open on to balconies which have cast iron brackets and railings. The placement of the windows is emphasized by the strong vertical lines of the quoins. The façade is completed by a parapet and decorative cornice.
