Port Vincent

Port Vincent Institute

Marine Parade North, corner of Carramulka Road, Port Vincent, South Australia, 1910.

A public meeting was held in 1908 to support the formation of the institute. The government granted the use of the land, and the foundation stone of the building was laid in July 1910. Until this time the local grain store had served as the main venue for social functions. The building erected by Frank Austin and Ern Travis provided a hall 32 feet by 62 feet with a stage and two dressing rooms, one of which housed the library. It was extended to include a supper room in 1920, and again in 1927 when the new foyer, fireproof projection room and cloak rooms were added to the front of the building. The District Council of Minlaton took over the building in 1969.
