Port Wakefield

Institute and District Council Chambers, Burra Street, Port Wakefield, South Australia, 1880.

The Institute was formed in 1878. The  building erected in 1880 was constructed of random calcrete with render applied to the openings. It provided a library and separate public and subscribers’ reading rooms, and in 1909 housed 2,000 books. The Council occupied the building from 1946 to 1977.
