The first settlement developed around a saw mill on Lower Farm Creek in the early 1870s, with timber milling, coal mining and mixed farming fuelling growth in the early 1900s. Land for the school of arts was purchased in January 1908. Although the names of three trustees are recorded, there is no reference to the erection of the building. According to an insurance document dated August 1917, the building was insured for 250 pounds. It housed a library and was the venue for meetings of local groups and social events such as card nights. It proudly displayed honour boards and sporting trophies. The building was auctioned to private owners in 1993, and now forms part of a private residence.
